Cusop Monument Inscriptions and Plan of Graveyard

This document lists the monuments and gravestones in Cusop Churchyard and inside the Church along with their inscriptions.  The second document is a numbered plan showing where they are located.

Thomas & Elizabeth Sheen lived in Cusop and they, and some of their children are buried in Cusop Churchyard. Thomas & Elizabeth Sheen lived in Whitehall Cottage which is now called Mousecastle Cottage. There are 2 family gravestones in the churchyard, one of which is recorded at both Hereford and Worcester Family History Centres as it is regarded as being of social history importance. The gravestone lies to the S.E. of the church (behind the yew trees). This gravestone also appears on line on Martin Nicholson's Cemetery Project.

The following information was kindly supplied by Josephine Wheldon (nee Jenkins) about her family.

"Thomas Sheen was born at Llanstephan, Radnorshire in 1839. He was a Farm Labourer and firstly married Eliza Leighton at Hardwicke Church on 8th February 1862. Thomas & Eliza had 2 children Rose and John but sadly Eliza died following her son's birth in 1864. Thomas later married Elizabeth Price on 27th March 1869 at Hermon Chapel, Rhosgoch. They had the following children...William born 1870, Elizabeth born 1873, Hannah born 1875 and Charles born 1877. They lived at Whitehall Cottage, Cusop. On 1st September 1879 tragedy began to strike this family as the children were taken ill with Scarlatina. The infectious disease quickly spread resulting in the deaths of John, Elizabeth and Charles on 5th September and Hannah on 24th September. Only 2 children from the family survived. Rose was not living at home as she was in service at Hay. William survived.....ironically the 5th September was his 9th birthday.

Thomas & Elizabeth had 3 more daughters Alice Catherine born 1880, Mary Ann (my Grandmother) born 1883 and Margaret born 1890 all born at Whitehall Cottage, Cusop.

Thomas and Elizabeth, Rose, John, William, Elizabeth, Hannah and Charles are buried in Cusop Churchyard.

My Grandmother Mary is buried at Hay Cemetery and Catherine and Margaret are buried at Builth."
