Cusop School History(presented to Cusop History Group 8/7/17)

School House, Cusop (pictured below in May 2012) was previously  the schoolmaster's house and has a foundation stone dated 1875. The small house joined on the ground floor next door, was previously a school.

The deeds that came with the house showed that both School House and the School building (now known as Greystones) were purchased privately from Herefordshire Council after the school closed in 1942.  Back in 1870 the Forster Elementary Education Act established partially state-funded Board Schools to be set up to provide primary education in areas where existing provision was inadequate. This must have been the case in Cusop leading to the building of the Board school in 1875 to cater for 45 pupils.

The arial photograph shows the location of the school. next to St Mary's Church, built on land from the Llydyadaway Estate, near the site of the old Cusop Castle.
