The History of the Gwernyfed Estate
Join us on Friday November 16th at 7pm to hear Colin Lewis, Professor Emeritus of Rhodes University in South Africa, tell us the fascinating history of 'Gwernyfed, 1600-1965, a great Welsh estate with international connections’. His most recent publication is 'Under the Black Mountains, the history of Gwernyfed since 1600'. The book includes four personal accounts of life on this landed Estate in Wales in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries: by the eldest daughter of the then landlord ('A Victorian childhood'), the grandson of a tenant farmer of the 1860s, a railway-man in the 1902-5 period, and reminiscences of the 1880s-1960s period, are prefaced by a brief history since 1600 of this, one of the largest landed estates in Wales.
