New Cusop Castle Group
Cusop History Group is starting research work on Cusop Castle, building on the existing information which is already available on our website. A small team has been put together to work on the project, which initially will be focused on data gathering. The owner of the Castle site is keen for the research to take place and has joined this team, which is great news and has enabled the project to go ahead with her full support.
In its early stages the project aims to assess and document the available source material and to identify, where possible, the build date, plan, ownership and other facts relating to the Castle. More broadly we also plan to investigate the overall historical context such as the Castle’s role in the border network and in relation to other local castles, and its place in the local economy.
We are working closely with Herefordshire Archaeology who are supportive of the project and who also attended an initial team visit to the Castle site in May, which gave us some very useful insights into their preliminary views.
This is by far the largest and most complex project that CHG has undertaken and a really exciting opportunity for our group.
One of our group members Ian Jardin has given us access to this very interesting LiDAR 3D map showing Cusop Castle in the centre.
