June 5th 2026 Day 1, 'Exploring the origins of Cusop'. Getting the Dig underway

First day of the Cusop Dig at Cusop Castle site, and after a briefing by Tim we got busy removing the turf from the first few of the 6 marked out trenches.

In the morning the Cusop History Castle team of Sue, Jane B, Jane P, Rosie and Linda got stuck in and joined the first two volunteers Leonie and Adelaide. In the afternoon we were joined by Lesley and 11 fresh enthusiastic volunteers. We had great fun learning to use mattock!s We're still only on the topsoil, but the sharp eyed ones found some Victorian pottery, clay pipes and iron nails.
